I recently visited the dermatologist for a skin check for the first time in my life. In my family we just didn’t grow up visiting specialists for anything (it was a stretch and I begged my parents to get me braces for years before they finally gave in). Thank goodness because the gap in my front teeth was less Claudia Schiffer or Rachel from this season of the Bachelorette and more like a dorky country farm girl (no hate to the farm girls out there, it’s just not me). Alas, this post is not about teeth but skin. My skin check went well and I walked away with $200 worth of recommended products I was eager to try, two of them are on this list along with a few other skincare recommendations).
5 Skincare Winners:
Raise your hand if you’ve ever had a cleanser that leaves your skin stripped and begging for moisture? *Raises both hands eagerly*, I know I’m being silly but I thought I was bound to emerge from the shower desperate for moisturizer ASAP. Turns out, my skin just needed a different style of cleanser. This origins frothy face wash is the same face wash my Mom used when I was in high school. She didn’t let me use her skincare products (can you blame her? haha) so I would sneak into her shower and use it. It’s been a hot second since I was in high school, and I basically forgot all about this cleanser until my last bottle of face wash ran out and I found myself browsing the Sephora website. As soon as I saw the familiar Origins bottle I knew I had to give it a try just to see if my memory was correct or if I was overly nostalgic. Turns out my high school self knew the good stuff when I saw it (or maybe my Mom just knew the good stuff) because I am in love with this cleanser. The frothy wash feels practically silky against my skin and though I still put moisturizer on after the shower my skin isn’t stripped from washing.
Prescription Strength Retinol Night Serum
There are countless articles about the benefits of retinol (see a few: here & here). I have used over the counter retinol products in the past but knew prescribed retinol was supposedly the *thing* to use. When my dermatologist recommended a very mild prescription retinol I decided to give it a try. I have noticed a difference in my skin already though retinol can take up to six months to see results. Initially I was using too much of the serum every night which I learned the hard way (dry, flaky skin), however once I adjusted to using a pea sized amount of the serum every other night my skin adjusted back to normal. I recommend doing your research & talking to your dermatologist before deciding if retinol is right for you.
I know this night cream is a splurge but please believe me when I pinky promise it is WORTH EVERY PENNY! I originally tested this night cream in the Goop Discovery Kit and knew I had to order the full sized product when my trail sized lotion ran out. This cream is ultra-hydrating without making your pores feel clogged and “goopy” (no pun-intended). I look forward to slathering this cream on after my serum at the end of the night because it feels like butter on my face. It’s like bringing the luxury of a spa into your own home (I can’t stop raving about this product, this isn’t sponsored or anything, I genuinely 100% adore this night cream). In the morning I feel like my skin is extra glowy. Since I am using a retinol serum every other night and retinol is fairly drying as you adjust to it, I find that this night cream combats the flakiness and leaves me with supermodel skin instead of lizard flakes. If you try one new product make it this!
I ran out of the Kate Somerville eye cream I usually use and Goop just so happened to be running a promotion that offered a discount when the eye cream and night cream were purchased together. Since I loved all the products in the Discovery Kit I figured it was highly likely I would like the eye cream too! Luckily, my prediction was correct, this eye cream is derived from olive butter, sandalwood nut oil and powerful peptides meant for instant and long term results. I like that Goop products strive to be as natural and organic as possible while still achieving results!
I bought this serum at the recommendation of my dermatologist without any research (something I just don’t do for skincare products) and started using it every morning before my Kate Somerville moisturizer. I had heard that Vitamin C was basically a miracle for your skin but I had not found a vitamin serum I liked. I gave this one a shot and I could not be happier. This serum is good for anti aging, fading scars and reducing the appearance of fine lines. However, I just love that serum makes me skin more radiant. Since using this serum I’ve noticed fewer breakouts on my jaw and fewer blackheads all over the place. My pores feel tighter and my face just looks brighter and glowier. Thanks Derm, definitely plan to keep using this serum.
Skincare is a huge priority to me. Not only do I care about having good skin now, but I want my skin to age well. I believe in splurging on skincare more than on makeup or haircare, not that hair & makeup aren’t important, it just seems like skincare is a greater investment. I’m all about seeing the greatest return with my product investments and with skin I see the difference between my $15 serum and my $150 serum (as I should, it’s a big difference).
My Daily Skincare Routine
- First I start with iS Clinical Super Serum on my forehead, cheeks and if there’s some left over I’ll rub it on my neck.
- Next is eye cream (currently using Goop but I’ve used Kate Somerville in the past).
- I love the feeling Kate Somerville Goat’s Milk Moisturizer on my skin in the morning.
- I finish off with sunscreen I’ve used a lot of different options and I’ve been told mineral sunscreen is the best. Right now I’m using MDSolarSciences mineral tinted creme in SPF 50. I like that it doesn’t leave an icky residue or white marks.
My skin is all prepped for the day. Some days I’ll swipe on mascara and get going and other days I’ll use bb creme/blush/etc.
- Usually I shower or at the very least take a bubble bath in the evening. I cleanse with Origins Checks and Balances, it feels so luxurious on my skin.
- After I’m out of the shower (or bath) I pat my face dry with a towel and apply serum. I alternate between my prescribed retinol serum and the Kate Somerville Quench Serum (I’ve been using this for years and can’t recommend enough).
- I dab on a little bit of eye cream with my ring finger.
- I look forward to using Goop Night Cream all day long, it is amazingly hydrating, my skin feels so happy when I put it on.
Now my skin is all ready for bed!
*Once or twice a week I’ll throw on a mask in the bath or shower after moisturizing. I like the Goop Exfoliating Facial if I’m in a hurry because it only takes 2 minutes and I like the Fresh Rose Face Mask for an extra dose of moisture, it’s great for dry skin.
