This year instead of creating a list of New Year’s resolutions I decided to focus on the 101 in 1001 goal list I created mid-October. Don’t get me wrong, I really like New Year’s resolutions! It seems like it’s really trendy to denounce resolutions, but I find goal setting really motivates me. The only reason I think New Year’s resolutions get a bad reputation is our tendency to act like a New Year’s resolution should be HUGE and life changing instead of small and manageable. Like anyone else I have those big life changing goals, but most big goals are made up of a hundred smaller goals. Breaking big goals into smaller, digestible goals is why I was drawn towards 101 in 1001 to begin with.
Though I am only a couple months into my 101 in 1001 list I am proud of my progress so far.
Work with a Personal Trainer
I’ve always wanted to work with a personal trainer but could never quite “bite the bullet”. I am super into cardio (particularly running) but I’m pretty clueless when it comes to strength training. I started working with a personal trainer once a week earlier this month. I am just getting started by incorporating more strength exercises into my usual gym routine. I am excited to see how I progress, I’ll be sure to share updates with you guys as I learn more.
I completed two other goals that revolved around fitness too! I attended a goat yoga class with my Mom in November (so fun) and completed a 30 day squat challenge. After the 30 day squat challenge I definitely felt like I had a better booty so I have tried to incorporate at least a few squats into every day.
Streamline Social Media
For most of 2017 I felt a bit disenchanted with social media. The social media world has grown and evolved so much since I started blogging five years ago and while there is so much about social media that I love, I find myself tired of all of the “noise”. It started to feel like a huge responsibility to keep up with Instagram/Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest/Blogging/Etc. While social media is fun for many and a career obligation for others I realized it wasn’t either for me. I felt compelled to post every humorous or slightly entertaining thought on Twitter and trying to post on Instagram on a regular basis (only to still lose followers) agitated me. The fact that social media was consuming so much of my mind and energy only made me more irritated. So, I deleted my blog’s Facebook account and my Twitter account on a whim and cut back on Instagram drastically. So far I don’t regret my decision and I feel that the extra time has allowed me to focus on other areas of my life instead. I definitely don’t think everyone needs to cut back on or delete their social media channels, but if you find yourself more unhappy with the time you spend on social media than uplifted I think it’s a sign to take a step back.
Home & Organization
A few of my goals revolved around decluttering and organization. I’m happy to say Jordan and I finally hung shelves and photos in our apartment. As an introvert (and a bit of a homebody) having a space that feels like “us” is so important to me. I like to curl up at home and I feel both cozier and happier when my space is decorated to reflect my taste. We still have a bit of organizing to do (#SmallSpaceProblems) but I am overall happy with our space.
Travel & Family
Over the holidays I visited my family in Calistoga (check) and went to Disneyland with my three younger siblings (check again). While in Calistoga I rang in 2018 with people I love and saw The Nutcracker in San Francisco. It was the season for crossing goals off of my list!
In case you missed my last post, I spent MLK weekend in Los Angeles visiting my bestie. The entire weekend felt like a giant slumber party and I was so happy to see my friend in her new home. I know I’ll be back to visit her before my 1001 days are over!
What do I hope to check off my list next?
During winter I find goals to be particularly motivating. I am generally a happy and productive person when the sun is shining and I can run errands without rain boots and a puffy, warm jacket. Summer makes me manically happy but winter can cause a rut. Goals, especially fun goals, help keep me moving and growing all winter long. Over the next couple months I plan to continue working with my personal trainer, I hope to take at least one ski lesson, go snowshoeing, try a new workout class (my friend teaches one that I really want to test out) and rebrand The Fairy Princess Diaries (coming soon).
Now that I am back in school I am focused on my goal of staying at the top 25% of my class, networking with Seattle attorneys and applying for summer internship/externship opportunities. I still love law school and I am really looking forward to getting a bit of real world experience this summer. I feel good about how I did in my first semester classes but I am more driven than ever to succeed. In undergrad I didn’t care about my exact grades as long as I did relatively well. Now I’m not satisfied unless I have an A! Additionally, I am trying to use my time at school productively. Instead of spending breaks between classes browsing instagram and online window-shopping, I am really trying to get reading and studying completed in the library so I can have more free time for working out/reading/spending time with friends in the evenings. Efficiency makes such a difference in overall productivity.
I am trying to read more for pleasure during the school week. Law school demands a lot of reading so its easier to spend my leisure time zoning out in front of my computer, however, I find my anxiety isn’t nearly as bad when I take time to read every day. Instead of devoting time each night to Netflix and browsing the internet I want to read in the bath or before bed. What have you read lately? I always love book suggestions.
Finally, I am putting a lot of hours into another creative project that wasn’t on my 101 in 1001 list. Right now I am keeping the details hush-hush while I wait for a few more pieces fall into place. I know, I know, blogging secrets are super annoying, but I am so excited I can’t help but tease a little. I’ll be sure to keep you guys 1000% in the loop when I have more details within the next couple weeks.
Do you like to set resolutions? If so how are they going so far? Or do you set goals year round? I love reading about what you guys are working towards so pretty please leave me a comment with your latest project or aspiration. xo!
