Two days, TWO DAYS of June is all we have left! The first month of summer has absolutely flown by. I spent the first half of the month with my family in northern California before making the road trip back with Genevieve and Pierre by my side. I spent a week attempting to get my life organized before starting my first law school class. Though my days have completely transformed I am grateful for every moment; I love being back in school. On the subject of school, that leads me to my first favorite of the month…
Back to School Vibes- After a three year break from school I was both anxious and excited to get back on campus. The novelty of getting to go to class and having something “important” to study hasn’t worn off yet. I’ve always liked the acts of school but I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate something like going to the library to read for class until I took three years off to work. Of course law school is going to be a bit more intense than undergrad but I’m looking to embrace all of the little school things I enjoy like highlighters in every color I can find (;
A Sweet Embroidered Tote- My 20 year old brother met his girlfriend, Madeleine in high school. They both chose the same college and have maintained their relationship as their lives have evolved and thank goodness for their relationship because I’m pretty sure my family loves Madeleine more than they love him (and probably more than they love me too). Madeleine is super creative and one of the most thoughtful people you’ll ever meet. She pressed and framed my Mom’s bouquet from her wedding, she crochets everyone blankets and slippers and scarves. This year for my birthday she nearly brought me to tears when she surprised me with a scrapbook of The Fairy Princess Diaries highlighting some of my favorite posts I’ve shared here. Then, this weekend she surprised me with a hand embroidered tote as a gift for beginning law school. I am constantly blown away by both her talent and her thoughtfulness.
Orange is the New Black Season 5- Originally I fell in love with Orange is the New Black because it approached a serious subject in a comedic matter. I admittedly knew little about the U.S. Criminal Justice system but after a few episodes of Orange is the New Black I wanted to learn more. Eventually I read the real Piper’s book “Orange is the New Black” which further highlighted the complex issues of the state and federal prison systems. I loved that the show shared glimpses into each character’s backstory and raised awareness (albeit television entertainment style awareness) about the systemic issues that can lead someone who isn’t just some horrible killer into the prison system. All that being said each season seems to have grown a little crazier and more far fetched. While I was eager for season five and loved binge watching it with Jordan, I was a bit disappointed by how over the top the prison riot felt. That being said of course I’ll be counting down to the next season (why do we have to wait an entire year?)
Mt.Si Hike- My first week back from California I was eager to squeeze in as much time with friends as possible. One Wednesday morning my cousin, Gen, and friend, Nicole, drove to Mt. Si for a day of hiking and girl talk. It was mostly overcast which actually was great for a steep hike (we never got too hot). At the top we shared a picnic and tried not to let Sue & Flash (my aunt & uncle’s ridgebacks Genevieve was dog sitting) maul us over as they attempted to catch the chipmunks darting in and out of the crevices between the rocks. It was so cool that we all happened to be at a point in our lives that enabled us to dart out of the city on a random weekday for a bit of time in nature.
Photos with Aleigh Michelle– Since I love coordinating photo shoots so much Jordan has kindly (and willfully) agreed to take cutesy couple photos with me once a year. What can I say? I’m a cheeseball. Last year we shot with Melissa Shaw (see our Pike Place photos and Woodsy photos). This year I reached out to Aleigh who actually went to my high school however, we didn’t know each other at the time because she is much younger than me but she married a guy I went to youth group with as a teenager. Thanks to the wonderful world of social media her photography found her way onto my news feed and I knew I wanted to work with her. We decided to shoot at Volunteer Park and the Seattle Public Library. I’m so excited to show you guys more photos but for now I thought I’d share two of my favorites<3
What were YOUR favorites this month? Happy almost Friday lovelies!
