I can’t believe Christmas is over. As always I am overwhelmed with all of the love and generosity from my friends, family and boyfriend. Friday night was spent wrapping gifts, Saturday morning Jordan and I grabbed brunch with friends before heading to a family Christmas Eve party and Sunday was all about eating and opening gifts with my family. The three day weekend flew by and I am back at work today before heading out of town tomorrow. I can’t complain about a one day work week!
I want to share a few of my favorite discoveries this month. As you guys know I love books and podcasts but generally don’t find movies all that entertaining. This month I discovered a few great documentaries I am excited to share.
Randomly quite a few of my favorites this month center around cults. I have always been very interested in religion as well as psychology. I believe cults are so interesting because they really illuminate the malleability of the human mind. If you’re ever bored try googling famous cults…it’s scary but fascinating.
Brain Candy Podcast| I started listening to the Brain Candy podcast a few weeks ago and I am totally hooked! The hosts, Susie and Sarah are apparently both well known for a reality show they both appeared on on MTV. However, as the only MTV show I’ve ever obsessed over is Teen Mom (ha!) I had never heard of either woman. Susie has a Phd in religious studies and Sarah is working on a degree in marriage and family counseling. Consequently many of their discussions center around psychology, religion and aspects of sociology. Inevitably they also discuss their participation on the MTV show but I mainly tune those parts out. Admittedly I was hooked after listening to an episode all about cults. I find the study of religion endlessly fascinating and cults are always interesting to learn about. If you need a new show to listen to I definitely recommend Brain Candy!
A Ballerina’s Tale: Misty Copeland| As always I am late to the party (don’t come to me to be a trend setter on television, movies or music) but while looking for a documentary on cults I stumble down upon the Misty Copeland documentary on Netflix. Since I was home alone at night and often am too afraid to watch Scream Queens by myself I thought the cult documentary would be a little too scary. Freshly inspired by The Nutcracker I opted to watch ballerinas instead. I can’t tell you what the cult documentary would have been like but Misty Copeland was totally inspirational (and not scary at all, ha)! I was so impressed by her inspirational story.
Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief| After the Christmas festivities were through Jordan and I cuddled up and watched the HBO documentary on Scientology. Romantic right? I don’t personally know anyone who has been involved with scientology but I have heard rumors about the religion. The documentary was eye opening! It was fascinating to learn the history of the religion as well as the common terms that are confusing to non-scientologists. If you are interested in cults, religion or the psychology behind belief the film is a must see.
The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders to Justice| Rebecca Musser was raised in the FLDS as the daughter of her father’s second wife. In her New York Times best selling book Rebecca shares her story. At age 19 Rebecca was married against her will to a man four times her age. Determined to be the best FLDS member and wife she could be Rebecca did her best to follow orders and “keep sweet”. After her husband’s death she fled the church and fought to protect other young girls as the commune grew more out of control. Rebecca’s story is both captivating and heart wrenching.
Chloe Chelsea Boots| Guys I have been eyeing these booties for months but could not justify spending close to $1000. Jordan was so sweet and bought me a pair of Louis Vuitton sunglasses for Christmas. I loved the glamorous aviators but felt like I wouldn’t get enough use out of them for the price (not to mention I was terrified of breaking the frames). I saw that the Chloe boots were 40% off for the Nordstrom half yearly sale and asked Jordan if he would be offended if I exchanged the glasses. Luckily he just wanted me to be happy. I was sad to return the Louis Vuitton beauties but I know I will get more wear out of the Chloe booties. If you have returns or exchanges to make now is a great time to shop. Nordstrom’s half yearly sale lasts until January 2nd and many other stores have great pieces on sale.
I hope your holiday weekend was filled with happiness & love. Enjoy the last few days of 2016 my lovely blog friends <3
