Oh gosh, where do I even begin? The weekend was so jam packed with events and adventure monday felt like a real slap in the face (even with a peppermint mocha at my desk to comfort me). One of my goals for the month of July was to host a Halloween in July party. I love dressing up and usually spend from August through October counting down to Halloween. Last year I even convinced Jordan to stay up until midnight to kiss a pumpkin and welcome October 1st. I’m not sure how this ritual came to me but it seemed like a really festive thing to do at the time. Perhaps I’ll continue the tradition.
When I told my best friend Nicole about by “Halloween in July” party idea she quickly jumped on the party train. She also loves Halloween, I mean obviously why we’re friends, and had a lot of great suggestions for making the party amazing. Since Nicole has a better apartment for hosting parties (aka she has a dining room table and I do not) we decided to host the party at her house.
The weekend before the party Jordan and I were conspiring about our costumes. I have a costume box filled with previous Halloween costumes but didn’t get as much of a thrill thinking of rewearing one as I did thinking of pretending to be something new. We tossed around a handful of ideas before settling on Princess Leia and a Jedi. Neither of us are huge Star Wars fanatics which probably makes our costume choices seem a bit peculiar. We mostly wanted characters other people would recognize and for the sake of convenience wanted costumes available on amazon prime. Princess Leia Costume Found Here & Jedi Costume Found Here
We tried to create a signature cocktail using orange juice and black vodka (recipe found here) and even created “spiders” on our pizza using black olives for the bodies and legs. For throwing the party together at the last minute it felt like all the little details really came together. Since so many of the guests actually dressed up (a concern even during the month of October at adult Halloween parties) it really did feel like Halloween!
It was great to catch up with a few friends I don’t see often. I even convinced my brother to come to our party (thanks to his sweet girlfriend for pushing him into it). One of my best friends just moved back to Washington after attending grad school in Tennessee which meant she could attend too. So exciting!
I have to say it has been the spookiest July to date! Of course the Halloween in July party played a big role but I’ve accidentally found myself reading a few eerie books this month too! I know I’ll have to wait a few more months to really throw myself full throttle into Halloween mode but at the very least Halloween in July party may need to become an annual tradition.
