The past few weeks I’ve been a bad blogger. I have embraced a new routine, a new method of transportation (taking the bus for the first time in my life), a new set of coworkers and a new outlook on life (at least for a minute). On the bus ride to work every morning I’ve adopted listening to e-books and podcasts (who would have known they actually are quite addicting) and though I’ve been a bad blogger, I’ve been happily busied.
Though I previously avoided public transportation at all costs, I do have to admit it’s really not that bad. I’ve found it the perfect time to revert into my own introspective world accompanied by new favorite stories. I’ll happily trade sitting in traffic angrily for the simple act of a passive passenger. It is infinitely more relaxing even when I am surrounded by a few dozen strangers.
Listening and reading like crazy I’ve enjoyed “Bad Feminist” by Roxanne Gay and “I’ll Drink to That” by Betty Halbreich. I recommend both books (to read or to listen to). I’ll Drink to That told the life and fashion career of Betty Halbreich, Bergdorf Goodman’s most senior employee. Light hearted and carefree, listening to the book on Audible I felt as if I was conversing with the world’s most chic and fashionable grandmother.
I am so glad I chose Bad Feminist as my first audio book from Audible. In general I really love feminist literature and I’d been meaning to read Roxanne Gay’s collection of feminist essays for quite some time. Listening to this book was an incredibly powerful experience. Roxanne Gay discussed, through a series of essays, her opinions (as a bad feminist) on reality television, Sweet Valley High, 50 Shades of Gray, childhood and more. The collection was both meaningful and relatable. I listened every chance I could get-commuting, cleaning the house, etc. Even the chapters that weren’t directly related to my own experiences either made me think deeply or laugh out loud (even awkwardly next to strangers on the bus). This would be a great book club book as the chapters were poignant conversation starters, I actually wished someone I knew was reading it so we could discuss! Whether you read or listen, Bad Feminist is required!
Sometimes you have to step back and take a break from creating just to let your mind me a receptacle for consumption. Between my new job at Amazon as a “Fashion Specialist” and a constant stream of books, audio books, podcasts, and a few episodes of Project Runway here and there…I’ve been mentally stimulated. The wheels in my mind are churning!
I don’t want to be a bad blogger-but I’ve always struggled to maintain a consistent blogging schedule as I adjust to a new routine. I hope I’ll be able to settle in to a more consistent (and frequent) posting schedule over the next few weeks. I hope you guys had a wonderful weekend!
