Driving home from work last night I was staring at the city skyline and mentally serenading Seattle with my love. It was then that I realized how much I have learned about myself since graduating high school, moving to a small farming town, moving to the city, moving across the continent to the wilderness of Nova Scotia and ultimately returning to Seattle. Granted my adventure sounds much more enticing and exotic than it actually was but it really reminded me how much I have experienced over the past five years. There are a lot of tangible necessities I could promote as necessities for girls in their twenties but as in most cases the valuable “things” every girl needs aren’t necessarily “things” you can pick up at the Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale. Today I’m sharing five of the most important intangible things I believe every girl in her late teens to early twenties should experience. Let me know what you think!
1| To Lose Love
While we all long for a fairytale romance to sweep us off our feet (myself included) I believe it is the loss of love that defines our character. Not only does losing a powerful connection with someone teach us to value those close to us but it reminds us to work at love each and every day. Furthermore to experience love, lose it and fall in love once more teaches us that even the most precious gifts in life are fleeting but also that there is always hope once more! I don’t believe in soul mates but I do believe in cherishing a relationship and working to keep it healthy and strong each day. I don’t know if I would have really appreciated this lesson if I’d never experienced loss or fallen out of love.
2| A Daring Adventure
The world is long and wide and wonderful! There are countless cultures to embrace, friends to meet and mountains to climb. Every girl needs the opportunity to explore outside her comfort zone every so often (whether that means a faraway exotic land, the next state over or choosing life in the city over life in the suburbs). Pushing yourself outside of the life you are used to begs you to grow emotionally and intellectually. Even small moves or cultural changes can be frightening but by traveling, growing, questioning and learning we become open to thoughts and ideas we never even considered before. Whether you’re scared to leave your home town, study abroad or simply backpack with your boyfriend across Europe remind yourself that often times the scariest moments in life have the greatest positive impact.
3|To experience True Loneliness
Loneliness is a powerful and all encompassing feeling and while I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone I truly believe it is a valuable emotion. When you are sitting in your parked car crying and feeling deflated with no one to call and no one to turn to but the Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath I can guarantee you aren’t going to feel strong or empowered but by pushing through these moments of isolation you gain something beautiful-the ability to be alone and survive. Feeling alone teaches you to value friends and families but perhaps more importantly it teaches you to love yourself. I have some of the kindest and most caring friends a girl could ask for but the periods of loneliness in my life have really fostered a love for myself and a confidence that no matter how hopeless and small I’m feeling I can get through it (even by myself if I have to).
4| A Success she created on her own
Connections and secrets to success are great and I would suggest anyone with ties to the editor of Vogue and the CEO of Nordstrom use them. Networking is powerful and friends in high places are inarguably valuable however there is something oh-so fulfilling about building something (anything) on your own and watching it grow! Whether you decide to forgo nepotism and forge your own career path, start an Etsy shop, or write a blog it is important for every girl to embrace her own abilities and claim her own power. Claiming your right to building success doesn’t mean saying “no” to advice or help when you need it, it just means putting in the blood, sweat, tears and late nights with copious amounts of coffee to achieve your dreams. When you are able to step back and stare at your own clothing line, e-magazine or collection of hand painted cat mugs you’ll be happy you built something of value to you on your own.
5|A Friend willing to put her in her place when she’s Wrong
I fall into the majority when I confess I hate being told I’m wrong and even further despise confrontation. Realistically there isn’t a single girl out there who is perfect (even Taylor Swift, gasp!) and every girl needs at least one true friend who is willing to tell her she’s heading down the wrong path, being a b*tch or settling. Confrontation in a friendship is scary (who wants to risk loosing their BFF?) so when a friend approaches you with honesty and respect listen to her (even if you don’t like what she has to say). I’m so grateful for the friends who aren’t afraid to tell me when I’m being bossy, or mean or giving up too easily. In the moment it can be hard to hear critique but in the end it is these friends who ultimately care about my growth as a person.
What do you think of my list? Of course it isn’t all encompassing! What sort of people or experiences would you add that you believe every girl needs?
