Moving into a new apartment always awakens my inner (fairly non existent) interior designer. It’s been a few weeks since I officially moved into my new bedroom (I have two roommates) and I am definitely still settling in. While the majority of my room is “put together” there are still a few boxes that I am anxious to get rid of this upcoming weekend. Looking at cardboard is slightly depressing no?
There are several factors playing into my bedroom design, the first and most important is cost. I will primarily be working with furniture and accents I already have (I used a similar color palette in my last apartment). Of course I will add small pieces over time however the main pieces are present. The second constraint is space, I have a fairly small room and a large walk in closet. It’s great because I can shove all of my clothes and dresser in the closet and even if it’s a total mess (which happens every time I get ready to go out…oops) I can just shut the door and pretend I live in a pristine perfect room until I am ready to deal with the disastrous closet. I’m sort of loving it. Since space is small I am forcing myself to limit wall decorations more than I would like to (I’m tempted to plaster hundreds of photos on the wall sorority style but forcing myself not to). I don’t want it to feel cramped!
The overall “vibe” I’m hoping to achieve is whimsical and romantic with hints of travel. I love cool Moroccan patterns (like the one on the pictured turquoise rug), I have a great shabby chic Paris piece I want to display and of course I want all of the tulle and peonies I can find. Turquoise, gold and white everywhere pretty please! If money weren’t a factor I would buy 75% of the Emily & Meritt Collection from Pottery Barn Teen, the golden canopy bed makes my heart skip a beat #HelpMeImPoor.
My final piece of inspiration (like always) is a Taylor Swift song, or in particular a line in Blank Space: “Magic, Madness, Heaven, Sin”. I’m hoping to create a canvas with the lyrics. Of course I need little pieces of Taylor in my bedroom but I’m a teeny bit old for posters and stalker-ish monuments to my love for her.
Do you have any decorating tips for me? Where do you find cute items for your home without spending your entire paycheck on one piece (yay for being a nanny)? I would love to hear how you decorated your space!
P.S. I am totally inspired by The Italian Apartment on instagram…basically it’s exactly how I want my
life bedroom to feel.
