If I were to make a list of things in this world that I really love Halloween would be pretty close to the top, it would be above ice cream and pizza and somewhere below champagne and Taylor Swift if that gives you a better idea. I countdown the days to Halloween starting in August because it’s the best part of the season…yadda yadda yadda blah blah blah, I’ve talked about all of this before right…here.
Today I’m going to talk about a very special Halloween back in my freshman year of college. Halloween 2010 was special for a lot of reasons. First of all, it was the first year since I was eight or nine that I really got into Halloween. The whole junior high and high school thing always made halloween feel awkward. “Am I supposed to dress up?! Do I still go trick or treating? I don’t want to watch a scary movie, I hate scary movies…is it baby-ish that I still want to be a fairy? Why don’t we still have costume parties at school???” It was all so confusing and if there were any cool high school Halloween parties (you know, Mean Girls style) I definitely wasn’t invited. Consequently, by college I was ready to make up for years of repressed Halloween shenanigans!
Since college means Halloweek (those fraternity guys obviously want an excuse to see all the girls dressed in their “cute” costumes right?!), I totally enjoyed the 4 days leading up to Halloween night but by the time October 31st arrived I spent the whole night in snuggling and eating candy…seems crazy right?!
As you can see La da di da dee, fun fun fun! Well Halloween day came and I was all set to dress as Alice and plop a big old white bow in my hair and trot out the door when I just happened to peruse craigslist (as all normal people do). I must have been high on halloween sweets (mini snickers bars duh) because I pulled up the pet section and alas decided I needed a puppy. Because who doesn’t need a puppy when you’re 18 years old and live in a dorm room and you don’t have a job or a car?!
After begging and pleading my boyfriend at the time (who lived in an apartment not a dorm) I won the rights to a puppy (I of course promised to walk it and feed it and love it and clean up after it every day, as a typical 5 year old would). So it was off to the world’s sketchiest trailer park to pick up my new baby. There were 6 precious puppies running around and I of course picked the teeny tiny runt who cuddled up to me right away (little did I know this neediness would eventually translate into destructive separation anxiety…whoops)!
She was absolutely adorable and in the Halloween spirit, I named her “Boo“. Of course I couldn’t tear myself away from my special little Halloween treat for some nasty old frat party, and I of course spent the entire night cuddled up with my baby dog.
Boo was a CRAZY, impulsive, irresponsible and EXPENSIVE decision…but she’s the most loving, sweet and loyal puppy I could ever ask for and I do not regret her one bit (don’t ask me again when she gets into the garbage and drags it all over the apartment or when she hogs ALL of the covers at night).
P.S. Thank you to Helene&Sarah for giving me an excuse to talk about my favorite Holiday and my favorite Halloween treat!
