A trip that began with seeing my Uncle naked in the dimly lit moonlight truly morphed into something wonderful, which seems difficult to believe at first. Jeff and I arrived in Calistoga just after 2:00 in the morning, since my thorough travel guide aunt hadn’t sent me instructions on what to do or where to go upon arrival at the Oakland airport…I,of course, assumed they were abducted by aliens. However a quick knock on the front door proved otherwise as my Uncle Stan stumbled out into the living room (in perfect site from the front porch on which we stood) completely nude. The worst part wasn’t the unintentional peep show but rather the fact that Jeff and I were still left standing in the dark as my Aunt and Uncle didn’t remember we were coming until we knocked a second time. Once they did remember we were coming they really were the most gracious of hosts.
The next morning after breakfast we rented bikes so Jeff and I could cruise around Calistoga. I was absolutely thrilled about the idea because less than a week ago I literally broke down (toddler style) begging Jeff to buy me a bike in Target. I’ve been fantasizing about biking around in the sunshine ever since. Jeff and I spent the first part of the afternoon as photographers. Jeff was taking pictures of my Aunt and Uncle’s new restaurant (still can’t spell that word…)and I was his assistant, which meant he looked like this:
and I was over in the corner laying in the sun and taking Selfies. I’m sure Jeff is still planning on paying me my hourly rate.
At the end of the business photo shoot, Jeff helped support everyone’s least favorite part about me, my inner super model diva. Despite being born without the genetics of a Victoria’s Secret Angel I still somehow believe I am one and indulge in my bikini model fantasies as often as my photographer boyfriend will allow. (I just realized the phrase “bikini model fantasies” could come off in the wrong way…I’m sure I’m going to get some pervy hits from google now…whoops).
After a long hard afternoon of work (mainly on my part, as you can see) we headed off to have lunch at the pool at the spa. There were a couple bottles of champagne, there was sunshine (a scorching ninety degrees I might add) and there were several pools with bar service. Is a further description necessary here?
It was clearly a really rough day.
Saturday was even better…we started the morning off with a hike. Even Jeff somehow managed to wakeup by 6:00 am and head up into the Calistogan hills.
As if our morning hike wasn’t nice enough we spent another afternoon by the pool at Solage Spa. This time there were popsicles involved, banana flavored for me.
Saturday night was rather whimsical. My Aunt and Uncle bought tickets for the Medieval Festival at the local winery, Castello Di Amorosa. As a super history nerd and costume enthusiast I was beyond excited.
There was wine (delicious), there was full contact jousting (and the horses were beautiful), there was archery (I even hit the target), sword fighting, tarot card reading (eerily accurate) and even fire eating. It was a full fledged Medieval Festival. Jeff and I were the youngest ones there, followed by My Aunt Jenn. The coolest part was that people really went all out with their costumes, although I might add…people really need to learn the difference between Medieval and Renaissance dress before they start scrutinizing me for my less than modest outfit.
All in all it was a fantastic night! We were all exhausted and slept in late Sunday morning before enjoying a leisurely day filled with eating, rapping along to “Baby Got Back” and of course biking. This is the only picture I have to show you, sorry bout it.
As for today…we’re leaving California. I can tell the doggies, Sue and Flash, are going to be really sad to see us go. As you can tell, I tried to be miserable the entire weekend to prove to California that it was absolutely in no way better than Washington but…given the circumstances it was nearly impossible. Forgive Me?
I’m already counting down the days until I return (Lake Tahoe in July, Los Angeles in September?)…
Oh and As promised, the link to Sue and Flash’s blog. They’re probably the top dog bloggers around, and exponentially more eloquent than Boo.
