Today I’m feeling especially “Seattle-y”(aka hipster aka grunge aka like a rich computer nerd). Maybe it’s because the sun rarely ever shines here (but it’s been shining all week), maybe its because I’ve been listening to Macklemore pretty much nonstop lately or maybe its because I really just love Starbucks and when you love someone (or something) that much you just feel the need to share that love with the world. Whatever the reason I’m all about this city and I’ve found that no matter where I travel I’m always elated to return home to all the hipsters and evergreen trees and even the rain (except for Florence…Florence is exponentially better than Seattle but otherwise Seattle’s great).
Seattle people are my kind of people because no one judges me for substituting multiple meals a day with Starbucks or the fact that Jeff thinks I would cheat on him with the baristas (…for free mochas).Don’t invite me to Tully’s or someplace that “proudly brews Starbucks coffee”…ew. Pretty much everyone’s a hipster around here. We’re all trying to pretend we’re not because we shop at Nordstrom and own three pairs of Hunter rain boots but there are way too many pairs of those thick rimmed glasses on people with 20/20 vision and people wearing flannel and straight across bangs for that to be true. Also it’s socially acceptable here to wear a north face fleece with shorts and sandals like some sort of hippie hiker anytime of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I think that’s pretty much the ugliest look in the world (oh also I’ve worn it)but let’s be real you can’t really expect anyone to wear heels… (or flats) (or cute canvas shoes like TOMS)because honestly it’s a complete joke…they’re going to get trashed by the rain and the mud within minutes.
On sunny days like today its just as exciting that “the mountain is out” and all of a sudden the population instantly doubles and everyone is having barbecues and heading to the beach and skipping work to go hiking and playing football in the street (okay that’s just on greek row). Instagram is blowing up with selfies captioned “#SUNNY” or “#LOVE THIS SUNSHINE”.
After the nice days comes post sun depression (maybe it’s just me?) I just want to lay in bed and listen to Death Cab and watch the rain hit my window and gradually I slip into an angst only rivaled by Kurt Cobain (or Bella Swan) because I know I’m not going to be able to wear a sundress again until July and those cute new sunglasses are bound to be lost or broken by the next time I need them. Good thing I just steal Jeff’s anyways.
Hopefully by escaping to San Fran for the weekend I’ll be able to store up some extra vitamin d until the sun comes for an extended stay in July. Probably not though.
P.S. I wrote this post so people who aren’t from Seattle can relate it to something other than Twilight or Starbucks…but if you have to choose between the two please choose Starbucks because there aren’t any sparkly romantic vamps around here (trust me I’ve checked).
P.S. Again…Now go listen to “The Town” by Macklemore and daydream about being here with me.
