Last year around this time my Aunt Jenn and Uncle Stan invited me on a surprise trip to go sailing on a chartered boat in the Caribbean with them. One of my mottos in life is to never turn down an opportunity for adventure and even though this trip meant missing school and consequently dropping my english class I knew I had to go.
The trip from Pullman to the Caribbean is not a short one, in fact it typically involves 3-4 flights and 16 (or more) hours of traveling, but if you’ve ever spent a winter in Pullman you’re fully aware that it’s worth it. Since I had a layover in Seattle for 5 hours (or something like that) I figured I would meet up for dinner with some of my friends who lived there. My friend Melinda was sweet enough to offer to pick me up from the airport and go out to dinner with me. As my flight landed at the Sea Tac airport just outside of Seattle I went to check my bag for my flight headed to Chicago and meet Melinda outside, to my dismay I found out that my flight had been cancelled due to poor weather in Chicago (Please, why do they even book flights to Chicago in the winter?! There’s always poor weather!) So my four day Caribbean trip was going to have to be cut short by an entire day. I was less than thrilled but I figured it would allow me to spend more time with Melinda and maybe meet up with the love of my life and party partner in crime, Nicole, as well.
As I walked to Melinda’s car I noticed a guy getting out of the car, “I hope you don’t mind I brought my friend Jeff,” she said and even though I obviously did mind what was I going to say to the poor guy who was helping me with my suitcase. I have manners. On the ride back to Seattle I told Melinda about my dilemma and she offered (okay I kind of invited myself) to let me stay with her. At the time I was crazily obsessed with this guy at UW who had really no interest in me but I still felt the need to (sort of) stalk him anyways. So I decided it would be a good idea for Melinda, Nicole and I to go out that night so that way I could “somehow” run into him at his fraternity’s party…the only problem was that I only had the clothes that I had packed for the Caribbean, aka shorts and tank tops and sandals, all of which were completely inappropriate for Seattle in March. So Jeff proceeded to give me fashion advice and tips about how to get that one guy to notice me. I pretty much thought he had to be gay so I decided he would be my new best friend once I moved to Seattle. So I went out with Nicole that night and kept my new gay BFF (who I had found out was also Melinda’s roommate) on my mind.
The next day Melinda had to babysit and Nicole had class and I still had until 6:00 that evening to wait for my flight, so Jeff offered to hangout with me since it was his spring break. We spent pretty much the whole day talking about my boy problems (I really know how to win over a guy) and eating veggie burgers and I realized Jeff wasn’t gay but decided to stay friends with him anyways. After dinner at Red Robin that night with Melinda, her boyfriend, Jeff and I, I borded my flight to Chicago and then the Caribbean. Jeff and I sent each other facebook messages for the next couple days (it doesn’t get more romantic than that) and then when I returned to Pullman we started texting constantly (oh wait, it just got even more romantic right?) I decided to visit him in Seattle one weekend to see if he was actually a fun person or was talking him self up via texting. My sorority sisters thought I was super obnoxious because I seemed like a boy crazy freak and I was texting him constantly (seriously everyday from 10am until past midnight, it was ridiculous). That weekend we had our first few amazing dates at the Seattle Art Museum and the Woodland Park Zoo. They obviously were pretty good because we started dating just a few weeks later after I finished classes in Pullman and we’ve lived happily ever after ever since.
How has fate worked in your favor?
The trip to the Caribbean was absolutely AMAZING! My Aunt Jenn is a truly gifted trip planner and she lived in the Caribbean for a few years so we couldn’t have had a better guide.Plus how can you go wrong with sun and water anyways? It was perfect perfect perfect!
This is my first ever link up with Helene in Between, she’s hilarious and every tuesday she blogs about traveling but really you should read her blog everyday because it will make you happier.
